Beer Pong Polyurethane Finish – Sanding Question?

I am finishing up a beer bong table. I applied the first coat of clear high gloss polyurethane. The directions say to sand the first coat before applying a second one. My question is: I have a design painted on the table, will lightly sanding the first coat and applying a 2nd coat give the table a cloudly/smokey look? We spent a lot of time painting the table and I’d hate to ruin it.

take some 00 steel wool and lightly go over the table tac cloth the table than put 2nd coat on
